I did a blog a while ago, maybe a year or more on knowing your market. Well that has become very important to me at the moment. I need to know what is out in the market for the line I'm now targeting.
I recently received a rejection about a story I submitted but in the rejection the editor said she'd like to work with me on my next submission - so excited. I have to come up with 3 proposals to present to her, which I did, but she came back and goes I need something more unique. Something that's happening now in the world. So it's back to the drawing board.
I was a little disappointed but it highlighted to me, that while I've been reading a variety of books at the moment from historical to contemporary I really need to know what is happening with the line I'm targeting.
Now it's time to buy the latest releases and see what's happening. Also reading the first three chapters isn't going to help me I need to read the whole book.
If you are now targeting a new line or even branching out and trying perhaps a short story, or novella. Before you submit you need to do your homework. You may not want to but you don't want to waste opportunities. See what they're buying. Do you very best. I'm going to say it again. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! That's what I'm doing now.

Too true. When my editor at Ellora’s Cave asked me to heat up the ‘love’ scenes the first thing I did was buy some current releases to get a feel for what she was looking for with regards to content.
Also remember that what is on the shelves now was acquired 6, 12 or even 18 months ago (when looking at print). So be aware, but not restricted.
